How Earth's Surface Changes
In this unit, students learned that Earth’s land surface is made up of rocks, sand, and soil.
In a Small Group Investigation, they studied Earth materials and find out how they move and change shape. Through videos and pictures, the students observed slow and fast changes. We even watched a Bill Nye video on erosion!
In their groups, they had to try to move the rocks, sand, and soil inside their dishes, with this challenge: you can’t use your hands! Instead, they used a spray bottle to represent water and blew in a straw to represent air. Afterwards, they discussed the following?

- How long do you think it would take for your whole rock to break down into sand?
- How do rocks break down in nature?
- What happens in nature that is like blowing air and spraying water?
- What can cause Earth’s surface to change?
